North Antrim Coast Weekend

Summary

A chance to unwind, sightsee, enjoy delicious food & drink and warm hospitality.

Duration: 4 nights/5 days

This short trip allows you to explore the many delights of the North Antrim coast - it also includes a night in Belfast. We recommend 3 nights on the coast, because there is so much to see and do. County Antrim is awash with spectacular scenery, ancient castles, glens and beaches. It has the world's oldest licensed whiskey distillery, and a World Heritage Site to boot.

We recommend getting there along the Causeway Coastal Route, which starts just outside Belfast and stretches around the east coast up to the north - on the way you'll pass by the famous Glens of Antrim. These nine glens offer great walking trails through quiet forests and alongside spectacular waterfalls.

If you're feeling particularly brave why not head to the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge (pre-booking recommended). This narrow rope bridge has a drop of 30m (100 feet) to the sea below and is most definitely not for the faint-hearted. It is possible to walk across (with the obligatory stop for a selfie to prove that you have done it!).

One of the iconic sites in this part of the world is Dunluce Castle, perched precariously near the edge of a cliff. It's possibly one of Ireland's most romantic castle locations.

The highlight of your trip must surely be the Giant's Causeway, Northern Ireland's only World Heritage Site, with 40,000 basalt columns said to be the remnants of a road to Scotland constructed by the giant Finn McCool. There is an excellent visitor centre here, which explains how the area was formed, as well as a decent cafe.

As you will be based in Bushmills it would be somewhat remiss not to spend a few hours at the Old Bushmills Distillery, the world's oldest licensed whiskey distillery. There are regular tours and you may be fortunate enough to sample some of the amber nectar afterwards!

For something a little different ... the North Antrim Coast has several sweeping beaches, so why not blow away the cobwebs by galloping along one of these often-deserted beaches.  Whether you are an experienced horse rider or not, contact us for further details.

The last night of the trip will be spent in Belfast, a Victorian city rich in architectural heritage and full of Victorian and Edwardian landmarks. It was once an industrial powerhouse, home to many industries including rope making, ship building and linen; the wealth generated from these industries is reflected in its grand buildings. Of course Belfast has a more recent and well-documented political history and tours are available to see the city's street art. These murals, centered mainly on West and East Belfast, have been described by Simon Calder from The Independent as 'the world's greatest open-air gallery'.

We can also arrange flights as part of a full ATOL protected package.
