About Korana Hotel
Hotel Korana, the most beautiful hotel in Karlovac was built way back in 1908 on the banks of river Korana, in the heart of the most beautiful park in Croatia - the Vrbanic perivoj (Urban Gardens). A historically known sanitarium, baths, picnic grounds... and the favorite gathering spot of the city on the very edge of Karlovacka Zvijezda, one of the symbols depicted on numerous postcards of Karlovac.
After World War II, Hotel Korana was named Hotel Park, but for the citizens of Karlovac, it always remained "Korana". Passage of time, lack of care and consequences of war destroyed its luster. Eager to continue the rich tradition of the hotel, at the turn of the third millennium the Srakovcic family took into concession the decrepit hotel building. In agreement with the Department for Conservation of the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Tourism, a new hotel was built as an identical replica, situated on the exact site.
In the presence of numerous dignitaries, friends and partners, on July 8, 2003, President of the Republic of Croatia Stjepan Mesic and the Minister of Tourism Pave Zupan-Ruskovic opened the renewed hotel Korana-Srakovcic. This marked the continuation of a 100 year Karlovac tradition. The success of this continuation is proven by awards such as the "Turisticki cvijet" (Tourist flower), in which Hotel Korana- Srakovcic was awarded the prize for the best small hotel in Croatia for 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Awards & Acknowledgements: Hotel Korana - Srakovcic has for the past several years wan an award for the best small family hotel in continental Croatia - "Turisticki cvijet - quality for Croatia". In this action carried out by the Croatian Chamber of Commerce and the Croatian Television, the hotel was awarded the best in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. In 2007 it came in second place, and in 2005 in third. The hotel's restaurant placed among the 97 best hotels in Croatia in 2010 in the Tourism info magazine.
The crayfish of Korana - a mark of excellence
Since the middle of the 19th century, during the summer months, numerous swimmers searched for refreshment in the waters of Korana in Karlovac. During the summer months, the water warms up to 24°C or more. As the old saying goes, "Korana strengthens the power of men and invigorates the beauty of women". The new baths were built in 1896 on the grounds of Rakov vrt, purchased for this purpose by the city of Karlovac. Rakov vrt (Crayfish garden) received its name from the river crustaceans (crayfish), which dwell in the clean and crystal waters of Korana.
It is no accident that the hotel - today's Korana - Srakovcic, was built right on top of this water rich with life. Although that same year Rakov vrt was reorganized into a park and renamed Vrbanicev perivoj, after the mayor of Karlovac at the time, crayfish are still a mark of purity and excellence of the waters of Korana.
The name of Rakov Vrt was kept in the name of the city district Rakovica, once a separate settlement, today a city district downstream from hotel Korana-Srakovcic. The successor of excellence is also the hotel itself - between the 19th and 20th centuries it housed dignitaries of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and today it welcomes dignitaries from around the world.
