About Imlil Valley Hike
This is a great introduction to the High Atlas; two reasonably challenging guided day hikes and a stay at our Head Guide's gite in Imlil.
Activity code: ITCTTM01m
Difficulty: GRADE ONE: walking mostly on paths at lower levels, sometimes rocky, seldom flat, for about 6 hours each day. Good shoes for walking would do but take boots if you are used to them. Suitable for anyone who leads a reasonably active life. NB. Hiking always involves some effort.
Duration: 2 Days
START / FINISH - Marrakech.
This mini hiking side-trip from Marrakech is a great introduction to the lower levels of the High Atlas and is available almost year round. You will meet the Berber people throughout this hike which includes a night in the local gite of our Head Guide in Imlil.
Ahead of you are two reasonably challenging guided day hikes - one up the Toubkal path to Sidi Chamharouch and the other a little more off the beaten track to the east of Imlil.
Our trekking organiser (Andy in the UK) and our Head Guide (Houcine in Imlil) have many, many years of experience of arranging treks in Morocco. This hiking itinerary is a tried and trusted one- timings are based on individuals and small party bookings and allow for amendments and short cuts if necessary for any reason. We have a wealth of experience in these areas so feel free to contact us to discuss your individual requirements.
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU BRING (depending upon season): good walking boots; waterproofs and fleece/duvet jackets, hats, balaclavas or ear muffs; gloves; rambler or ski pole; personal toiletries; small First Aid kit, thermal underwear (Dec-May); day pack; filled water bottles; torch and batteries (LED head torches are excellent), penknife (remember not to pack in hand baggage for flight); towel, sunscreen, insect repellent, hygienic wipes, nibbles and/or dried fruit. Drinking chocolate if preferred to tea and coffee, camping mug (otherwise it is small Moroccan tea glasses for everything), energy sweets and toilet rolls could come in handy!
MEALS ARE NORMALLY:
NB: all our prices are for land arrangements only (starting and finishing in Marrakech), please contact us to arrange accommodation in Marrakech or Imlil or Ouirgane as well as flights from your preferred airport.
Depart by car from Marrakech around 8am for an exhilarating 2 hour drive south up to the Berber town of Imlil (1740m), set in the upper foothills of the High Atlas mountains; a main trailhead with streams and paths branching out in all directions. Here you will meet up with your guide to take a welcome glass of mint tea in the gite d'etape of our Head Guide prior to setting out towards the south. Your route will take you to the Berber villages of Aroumd (1843m) Taourirt, Targa, and Imoula, up and down the stark slopes with the Western High Atlas peaks of the Toubkal Massif before you.
Your guide will plan a stop at Aroumd to visit this rather singular village in the Assif n'Ait Mizane Valley, built seemingly house upon house on a large moraine spur, overlooking ancient irrigated terraced fields of fruit trees and vegetables. From here carry on to the equally-quaint Sidi Chamharouch, a Berber village set beside a waterfall and small stream, again with its pise homes seemingly built somewhat chaotically one into another. This village is a place of pilgrimage for devout Moslems and it is where there is a marabout shrine - forbidden to non-Moslems and said to be a relic of a pre-Islamic religious cult. Your guide will prepare your picnic, within full view of Jbel Toubkal, at 4167m the highest peak in the Maghreb, prior to setting off back down the other side of the valley back to Imlil for dinner and overnight in the Berber Gite d'etape.
After breakfast set out today up winding mule tracks to the Tizi n'Tamatert (2269m) to enjoy the amazing panorama of the surrounding Atlas mountain range peaks and valleys on your way to a picnic spot on the Tizi n'Ouanskra (2100m). Refreshed, set off down to the Assif Imenane Valley, passing by several Berber hamlets and then up to the Tizi n'Aguensioual (1938m). Once through the col your guide will lead you down more winding mule tracks leading to the village of Aguensioual where you rejoin your transport to take you back to Marrakech.
Two days fully-inclusive guided and supported hiking from Imlil. Includes English-speaking guide, transport, all meals and all accommodation.

"Our accommodations in Marrakech were superior, and the mountain trek to the Azzaden Trekking Lodge and back to the Kasbah du Toubkal was first-rate. In addition, all dealings with Rediscover the World UK were exceptional."
