Cycle the Ciro Trail

Self-guided cycling holiday in southern Herzegovina.

Summary

The Ciro Trail is a cycle path that begins in Dubrovnik and travels through southern Croatia into Herzegovina and on to the majestic town of Mostar.

START / FINISH - Dubrovnik

Activity code: BOCY01

Difficulty: Moderate (approx. 45 – 85 km cycling per day).

Duration: 7 Days

This cycling route uses the track of the original steam railway built in 1903 during Austro-Hungarian times, but closed in 1976. It has now re-opened as a new and unique bike trail named Ciro (after the popular steam train, Ciro). An important note, the bike trail does not follow original railway ALL the way from Dubrovnik to Mostar because some parts are still used for train traffic (between the town of Capljina and Mostar). On this itinerary we have included small alternative roads near to the railway on that section.

On your arrival at Mostar you could continue cycling further up north to Sarajevo (capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina); however it would take a few more days.

Additional Information

This tour combines paved and unpaved roads (gravel). There are few steep climbs; however, not more than 5-7%. The route passes through stunning landscapes: the green valley of Popovo Polje, rivers Trebisnjica and Neretva, rural areas and small villages of Herzegovina, picturesque and historical towns: Dubrovnik, Mostar, Pocitelj.

This is very different and unique bike ride which gives you an opportunity to explore unique scenery, sleep in old train stations and taste great local food. The Ciro bike route is a seven days bike tour from Dubrovnik, following old Austro-Hungarian railroad trail up to Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina and goes back to Croatian coast, finishing in Dubrovnik.
