Explore the northernmost corner of Croatia and the highlights of Slovenia on this perfectly balanced self-drive holiday. Starting in the historic city of Pula, your route takes in the full Istrian Peninsula, with its dramatic coastlines, charming hillside villages, and a wealth of culinary delights, as well as nearby islands such as Krk or Cres. The itinerary then crosses into Slovenia, where you can enjoy the compact and welcoming capital, Ljubljana, the breathtaking scenery of Lake Bled and Triglav National Park, and the remarkable Postojna Caves. This holiday is designed to give you a rich mix of culture, history, stunning landscapes, and relaxed exploration.
Your journey begins in Pula with a smooth transfer to your hotel, leaving time to wander the city’s historic streets, visit the magnificent amphitheatre, or perhaps take a short trip to the Brijuni Islands. From here, you can explore the Istrian countryside, visiting coastal towns or hilltop villages such as Motovun, famed for its culinary treasures, truffles and local markets. Driving distances are short, allowing plenty of time for sightseeing, leisurely walks, or extended lunches overlooking vineyards and olive groves.
Crossing into Slovenia, the itinerary offers the chance to spend a couple of nights in Ljubljana, a city full of charm, riverside cafés, and elegant architecture, before heading to Lake Bled and Triglav National Park. Here, you can enjoy hiking, boat trips, or simply relaxing amid the spectacular alpine scenery. On the return journey, a visit to the Postojna Caves provides a fitting finale to your exploration of this part of Europe. The circuit concludes back in Pula, where you drop off your car and prepare for your journey home.
Designed as a flexible circuit, this itinerary could equally be started in Ljubljana, or extended with extra nights in any of the locations to suit your own pace and interests.

Itinerary
Day 2 - deliver hire car to your hotel. Local sightseeing, such as the Brijuni Islands from nearby Fazana, other sights include Svetvincenat and many more fascinating places.
Day 3 - drive through centre of Istria via Pazin (a prettly little town with a zip-wire over its gorge) to the east coast and visit the old-style Austro-Hungarian resort of Opatija. From Opatija you can choose to visit the nearby city of Rijeka, the Ucka Mountains and Krk Island (in fact you may prefer to stay on Krk Island, which is accessible by an impressive bridge near Rijeka).
Day 4 - drive north into Slovenia via a choice of routes such as the scenic road through the Risnjak National Park and then the highway to Ljubljana.
Day 5 - today will be a full day to explore Ljubljana on foot and by public transport. Visit the castle using one of the many footpaths up the hill or by taking a ride in the funicular, consider a boat trip on the river or hiring bicycles to explore this compact city, including the huge Tivoli Park not far from the centre. Ljubljana has some great food and wine to sample, a fabulous market, a zoo, a museum of illusions and many different types of tour, e.g. Segway, Moustache Tour.
Day 6 - drive north to Lake Bled and the Julian Alps. Possible detours en route include the small town of Kranj, the historic village of Radovljica and maybe even Kamnik and the Velika Planina.
* a possible detour here or extra night(s) in the remote Logar Valley via the Velika Planina.
Day 7 - a full day to explore the lake, including its island by Pletna Boat, and the castle; you can walk or cycle around the full shoreline of the lake and explore further on trails in and around the Triglav National Park. On the shore of the lake there is a summer toboggan run, a zip line and mini-golf; nearby is Lake Bohinj and the Vogel cable car to the west and to the north is the Vintgar Gorge.
We suggest a scenic drive through the mountains via Bohinj, Most na Soci and Idrija to Postojna, visiting nearby Predjama Castle if time allows; a picnic may be a great idea to enjoy along the way.
If you stay an extra night in Postojna you will definitely have time to visit Predjama Castle and maybe also the Skocjan Caves and the home of the Lipizzaner Horses - all within a very easy drive of Postojna.
Visit the Postojna show caves first thing in the morning (they are just a short walk from both hotels and tickets can be pre-booked online), you then have time to enjoy the general surroundings away from the main crowds. Afterwards, head south to the Adriatic coastline of Slovenia and back into Croatia. Your ultimate goal today will the be the beautiful old town of Rovinj half way down the Istrian Peninsula but you could also choose Porec or Motovun if you prefer.
