Souks & Sahara

Marrakech and the Desert via the High Atlas

About Souks & Sahara

A city break & desert adventure combined; let us whisk you away to the Sahara for two nights under the stars (or in luxury Bedouin tents).

Activity code: MOHO03

Duration: 7 Days

START / FINISH - Marrakech.

The Souks and Sahara Adventure is a 'not-to-be-missed' holiday on which you experience the incredible variety of Morocco. This trip combines the fabulous and magical city of Marrakech, the stark beauty of the High Atlas Mountains and the incredible panoramic views and solitude of the real Sahara. This is a quite unique and deluxe holiday - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This Marrakech and the desert itinerary is a tried and trusted holiday in Morocco for couples and families looking for something a little different in just one week (although extra nights to spend in the mountains or at the coast, e.g. Essaouira, are also popular). We include door-to-door private transfers, two nights in two different, incredible locations in the true Sahara and some great off the beaten track scenery in between.

Highlights of the Souks & Sahara Holiday

  • MARRAKECH - Nestled on a large plain at the foot of the snow-capped High Atlas Mountains, it is the perfect city to begin your visit to Morocco. Surrounded by its original fortified city wall Marrakech entices you into its midst to explore the historic and labyrinthine Medina, the majesty of the Bahia Palace, the tranquillity of its many famous gardens and the sophistication of its more modern boulevards, cafes and riads. Today, Marrakech has become a thriving metropolis with chic night spots, top restaurants and a very modern atmosphere in places. All of which emphasises the immense historical context of the Medina and its focal point, the Djemma el Fna.
  • SAHARA ADVENTURE - The Sahara seems such a long way away that it would not seem possible to get there and back in three days from Marrakech but with Rediscover the World a visit to the true desert of Morocco's deep south is a reality. The nearest section of the Sahara is just a little bit south of Zagora at Erg Lihoudi. En route you will visit the famous (from its film appearances and UNESCO status) Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, traditional potteries and the incredible ancient library at Tamegroute. Part of the adventure is a ride through the palmeraies and dunes on the back of a dromedary followed by a night at a Bedouin camp. All told the experience will leave you with incredible and magical memories of the awesome canopy of the starlit heavens and the peacefulness and tranquility of the desert.
  • The JOURNEY - From your riad in Marrakech your journey will begin across the Glaoua Plains and up via the winding road over the High Atlas Mountains through the Tizi n’Tichka (2260m). From this high point you will see a dramatic change in the countryside - from high mountain ranges to semi-desert and oases. This particular trip also takes you to the incredible dunes of Ch'Gagga (truly off the beaten track) for a second night in a desert camp. The return home is by a different route which includes the desert outpost of Foum Zguid and remote town of Tazenacht so that your journey makes a full circuit of the south.
  • RIADS in MARRAKECH - Many treasures, especially the now-famous riads are hidden away in Marrakech and other cities in Morocco, such as Fez and Essaouira. Riads are houses, built around a central courtyard patio, whose outside walls are entirely closed. They are often converted into guesthouses or restaurants and are a symbol of the Moroccan art of fine living. We recommend riads in our programme where the local staff are integral to the experience and all food and drink and many other materials involved with your stay and the building itself are all sourced from the local area.

"Seeing the Sahara and experiencing sunset in this magical and barren place. Our guide for the Marrakech walking tour was lovely and knowledgeable and showed up some truly wonderful sites. Our guide/driver down to the Sahara, Wadii, was simply amazing. His humour and friendliness were infectious and every moment of the trip was pure magic. I would recommend him a million times over for any kind of trip in Morocco, be it a desert adventure or trip around Marrakech."

E Tilley, March 2019

"Marrakech was magnificent, magical and mad! It was one of the most interesting and delightful holidays we have ever had as a couple....if you are looking for a shake-up of the senses and experiencing stark differences, from the madness in Marrakech to the silence in the Sahara to the breath-taking mountain top hotel, then this trip is for you."

S Klein, Spain, July 2018

"Our holiday was first class, Rediscover the World understood our requirements and delivered. Highly recommended."

M Lillington, UK, May, 2017

"Thank you for your help in organising this holiday, we had a fantastic time! The desert tour and camel trek was a real highlight, and the riad in Marrakech was perfect - beautiful rooms and helpful staff. All the logistics ran smoothly and the local guides were very good (although the stop in Tamagroute was not so interesting). Overall a great experience and I will contact you if we decide to visit any of the other destinations offered by RTW."

T Hall, UK, Sept 2016

"Just to say a huge thank you to you all for arranging such an amazing holiday. The riad was beautiful and the staff all so kind. Our trip to the Sahara was fantastic and we were royally looked after - were the only couple at both camps so had very good care with our own personal team to look after us! The transfers, travel and activities all went seamlessly and we would thoroughly recommend you."
