Marrakech Express - Morocco by Train

[Tailor Made Holiday]

About Marrakech Express - Morocco by Train

Morocco has a modern & reliable rail network; trains run from Tangier to Marrakech but you can start at any location with any route combination.

Activity code: MOHO06

Duration: 8 Days

A more interesting and environmentally responsible way to visit this fascinating country. Morocco's railway network has been systematically updated to offer Africa's first truly high speed trains, providing a comfortable and reliable service with new and pleasant stations awaiting you in many cities. This version of the itinerary makes the most of the current network but we can offer any reasonable combination of journeys and locations. In our experience this is an ideal holiday option for those arriving from Spain or combining Morocco with Andalucia.

Our Marrakech Express package is an ideal choice if you who wish to experience the contrast between Morocco's historic cities; travelling by train will offer a fabulous insight into the day to day culture of modern Morocco as well as its famous past and does, of course, come with a much smaller carbon footprint...

Highlights of the Marrakech Express Holiday

  • TANGIER - Tangier has recently seen some of the revival and renovation that has brought Marrakech and the south such attention and popularity in recent years. We believe that Tangier should not be overlooked as it can provide an ideal start or finishing point and it certainly retains its powerful charm to this day… from the previously nefarious alleys in the Petit Socco area to the many avant-garde café terraces.
  • FEZ - described as 'the most perfectly preserved and working mediaeval city in the world' and we feel that Fez's atmosphere and topography contrasts quite dramatically with Marrakech. Historically, the first of the Imperial Cities and made up of three centres, Fez deserves a couple of days of any visitor's time in Morocco. The city has adapted to modern life without losing its traditions and many of its habitants have almost the same way of life as they had back in the 13th century. Fez is renowned for its cuisine so you'll find that several hotels now organise cookery courses.
  • RABAT - Rabat, the current capital of modern Morocco, has much to thank the French for, its well designed boulevards are a perfect setting for the culture and grandeur a state capital should offer. The Royal Palace, the unfinished mosque with its striking Hassan Tower, the necropolis at Chellah and the grand Mauosoleum of the Kings (Mohammed V and Hassan II) are a perfect combination of sights for the visitor. Rabat has a human scale and even its medina and souks are relaxed and laid out in grid pattern.
  • MARRAKECH - Nestled on a large plain at the foot of the snow-capped High Atlas Mountains and surrounded by its original fortified city walls Marrakech entices you into its midst to explore the historic and labyrinthine Medina. Today, Marrakech has become a thriving metropolis with chic night spots, top restaurants and a very modern atmosphere in places. All of which emphasises the immense historical context of the Medina and its focal point, the Djemma el Fna.
  • RIADS - Many treasures, especially the now-famous riads, are hidden away in Marrakech and other cities in Morocco, such as Fez and Rabat. Riads are houses, built around a central courtyard patio, whose outside walls are entirely closed. They are often converted into guesthouses or restaurants and are a symbol of the Moroccan art of fine living. We recommend riads where the local staff are integral to the experience and all food and drink and many other materials involved with your stay and the building itself are all sourced from the local area.

Why book with Rediscover the World ?

Accommodation: we have personally chosen the riads in this itinerary; all of them offer high quality accommodation. You may prefer a small and friendly property or one of the luxurious boutique-style riads or perhaps a deluxe hotel with lots of facilities to enjoy during your stay, (please let us know if you'd prefer alternative accommodation).

Transport: to take the stress out of arriving and departing we offer a private airport [or port] transfer service. Also included are private transfers to and from your riads and the railway stations and the excellent train service (we will pre-book 1st class tickets for you).

Extra Information: We are able, through our local agency, to book activities and additional sightseeing, particularly in Marrakech - such as hiking, cookery classes, golf, quad biking, etc.

"My wife and I made a journey through Morocco during February. We decided that using trains and staying at riads would form a central part of our journey theme and are awfully glad we did. Our main advice and booking was aided by Andy and Dawn, Rediscover the World UK. We had a number of requests for guidance, all of which were met with patient, knowledgeable and practical responses. One city only offered very expensive options for a guide and we were left in no doubt that it was expensive and alternative solutions found. This is the mark of a good agent/adviser. One city had considerable restrictions on available accomodation owing to a music festival and still they managed to find something suitable. There was a lot of work involved in solving this, which we appreciate."
