START / FINISH - Bucharest

Activity code: RONAT01

Duration: 11 Days / 10 nights

This small group guided tour combines some of the cultural and historic highlights of Romania with the beauty of its nature. Join us for a fabulous visit to the unique Danube Delta landscape, encounter bears in the Carpathian Mountains and enjoy some magical walks in the wild countryside of Transylvania and Moldavia. A holiday in Romania that conjures up a heady mix of culture, history, natural beauty, legends, adventure, traditional food and fun…. come and see, taste, hear and rediscover Romania!

Romania is one of the most unexplored parts of Europe, tucked away in a remote corner where few visit and about which fewer still have much knowledge, beyond the connection with the myth of Dracula. Much of Romania is virtually untouched countryside and follows a way of life that has long been extinguished, or at the very least diminished into very small pockets, elsewhere in Europe; the centuries old folklore and traditions still thrive in its picturesque villages.

This tour, with our superb Romanian guide, takes you back in time, allows you to meet some of the friendliest people in Europe, many following traditional ways of life untouched by the modern world. Whilst you will cover a lot of the country the tour is relatively relaxed in its pace, helped by the small numbers and the knowledge, experience and flexibility of your guide. It is suitable for all ages and most ability types; much of the sightseeing is done on foot but we are able to use the transport effectively for those less able to walk long distances and there is time available for others who prefer to explore a little more.

Rediscover the World is committed to providing unique and carefully thought out small group tours that combine the highlights of the country together with some of the lesser-known wonders. Our guides think about the whole experience and will use their experience to allow you into the homes of the locals and many of the lesser-known places that will make your trip unique. We believe that a small group size is imperative for this kind of travel and we therefore keep our maximum number to 12.

If you prefer to arrive into Bucharest we can arrange an overnight hotel and/or onward train or flights to the starting point of this tour.

The Natural Wonders of Romania complements and builds upon the success of the Beauty of Yesterday and Guided Hiking tours; it has a well thought through itinerary and a superb local guide. Let us take you right into the heart of this fascinating country by sharing our knowledge and the experience to offer not just important cultural sights, dramatic scenery and historic locations but the opportunity to spend quality time in the villages, often staying in rural communities as guests of local families, where local culture is at its strongest.

Highlights

Itinerary

Arrival into Bucharest International Airport where you will be met by your guide and transferred to Sinaia in the foothills of the Carpathians. On your first evening we include a traditional dinner with wine and champagne.

Overnight at Vila Camelia in Sinaia.

After breakfast you will visit the incredible Peles castle, the royal summer residence of Romania's kings. Afterwards head north into Transylvania to the city of Brasov for a guided tour around the centre with its incredible historic buildings, includes lunch.

In the afternoon you will visit the Fortified Church of Prejmer (a UNESCO site) and then continue to Bran for a visit of the famous castle (associated with the legend of Dracula); there will be time to enjoy a one hour easy walk around Bran village and the surrounding countryside.

Dinner and overnight at Casa din Bran in Bran.

After breakfast you will take a scheduled visit to the Bear Sanctuary in the wild forests near Zarnesti. Following this encounter with Romania's wildlife it is time to take in some more cultural sights with a drive through southern Transylvania passing through some traditional villages then a visit to the fortified church at Biertan. After a picnic lunch in the countryside continue to the town which epitomises gothic Transylvania more than any other - Sighisoara.

Dinner & overnight accommodation in a hotel in the mediaeval citadel.

After breakfast a walking visit of the wonderful sights of Sighisoara's historic centre including the clock tower, Dracula's birthplace and the covered walkway.

Then depart for Piatra Neamt. After about 3hrs drive you will arrive at Lacu Rosu (The Red Lake) where your guide will take you on a two hours easy hike first around the lake and then through the Bicaz Gorge. This is stunning scenery and is definitely best experienced on foot.

Dinner and accommodation at a traditional guesthouse in Piatra Neamt.

After a tasty breakfast it is time to say a temporary goodbye to your hosts and depart for Bucovina. On the way there is time to visit Agapia monastery followed by a visit to the Nicolae Popa ethnographic museum in Târpești - an absolutely unique collection of masks, costumes and other objects of folk art.

After lunch, you will arrive into the fairytale land of the Painted Churches of Bucovina. Enjoy a walk through the village of Vama near your guest house to work up an appetite for more home-cooked fare.

Dinner and accommodation at a traditional guesthouse in Vama.

Visit the monasteries of Moldovita, Sucevita and Voronet in the morning. Onward drive south and return to Piatra Neamt.

[Optional] Easy hiking around Vama village in the afternoon or perhaps a walk up to Cozlan Mountain via the cable car in Piatra Neamt (small charge for cable car, not included) * choice will be decided upon with a group decision.

Dinner and accommodation back at the traditional guest house in Piatra Neamt.

After breakfast, a relatively long drive to the Danube Delta through the plains of southern Moldavia (lunch stop en route). From the port town of Tulcea you will transfer by boat to Crisan Village on the Sulina Branch, the shortest of the three branches of the Danube Delta. Crisan Village is a fishermen's village with a few houses spreading over the right bank of Sulina and a fishery on the other bank and it makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding lakes and canals.

Dinner and accommodation in a guesthouse in Crisan.

Breakfast at the guesthouse and then a full day to discover the Danube Delta. A trip by private boat through the narrow canals to Uzlina and Isac lakes in the morning and then in the late afternoon a pleasant walk through the village of Crisan.

Today explore the beautiful lakes of Bogdaproste, Trei Iezare and Cazanele. Along the way you may see Red-necked Grebe, Dalmatian Pelicans, Pygmy Cormorants, Great Cormorants, Night Herons, Squacco Heron, Golden Oriole, Kingfisher, European Hoopoe, European Cuckoo.

Transfer in the afternoon back to Tulcea by boat and an onward short drive down the coast to the historic town of Constanta on the Black Sea

Dinner and overnight accommodation at Hotel in old town of Constanta.

After a leisurely breakfast you will have a guided visit of the historic heart of Constanta, then depart for Bucharest along the highway.

A Panoramic city tour of Bucharest is included upon arrival with a visit of the main sights of the old town followed by a walk around the lake in the largest park of the capital city.
