Slovenia Uncovered – A Scenic & Cultural Fly Drive Adventure
If you have around two weeks to explore Slovenia in depth, this carefully designed self-drive holiday offers the perfect balance of cultural, historic, and natural highlights. Starting in the charming capital of Ljubljana, your journey will take you through stunning National Parks, historic towns both large and small, and Slovenia’s beautiful Adriatic coast. The route is a full circuit from Ljubljana, so you may begin via Lake Bled and return along the coast, or vice versa. This itinerary can easily be extended with extra nights in existing locations, or by branching out to neighbouring destinations such as Zagreb and Plitvice Lakes in Croatia, or the Istrian Peninsula.
All our fly-drives feature tried and trusted routes with suggested sightseeing included in your final travel documents, while allowing freedom to explore or relax at your own pace. Excellent driving conditions, including modern highways, reduce travel times while leaving scenic minor roads open for those who wish to enjoy Slovenia at a slower pace.
Your holiday begins with time in Ljubljana, a compact and friendly city perfect for wandering by day or evening, with historic architecture and excellent viewpoints. From here, the drive east through the Sava Valley brings you to Celje and the atmospheric town of Ptuj. Continuing north along the Drava Valley, you reach the secluded Logar Valley, a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with a wide range of activities amidst dramatic alpine scenery. A short mountain pass leads west to Lake Bled and Triglav National Park, where you can stay in Bled, Bohinj, or Kranjska Gora and enjoy the fresh air and outdoor pursuits on offer.
Your journey continues through the spectacular Vrsic Pass, allowing you to discover mountain villages and meander along scenic back roads. A stay in Bovec in the Soca Valley offers adventure opportunities, while a detour into the wine-producing Goriska Brda region provides a contrasting experience of gentle hills and vineyards. From this lesser-known corner of Slovenia, the route descends to the coast, with Isola or Piran as ideal bases for exploring Slovenia’s small but stunning Adriatic shoreline. From here, day trips into Croatia (Rovinj, Porec, Motovun) or northern Italy (Trieste or even Venice) are easily achievable. Your final stop en route back to Ljubljana is Postojna, with its remarkable caves and underground galleries, before returning to the capital for your flight home.
