Romania is one of the most unexplored parts of Europe, tucked away in a remote corner where few visit. Many people don't know much about this gorgeous country, beyond the connection with the myth of Dracula. Much of Romania is virtually untouched countryside and follows a way of life that has long been extinguished, or at the very least diminished into very small pockets, elsewhere in Europe; centuries-old folklore and traditions still thrive in its picturesque villages.
Bosnia and Herzegovina has had a very interesting history, although too often that history has been sad and turbulent, but that is exactly what gives this country its peculiarity. It has been part of the Ottoman Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the kingdom of Yugoslavia between the wars and a Socialist Republic during the Cold War. Now it is an independent country with an intriguing mixed heritage and a bright future.
Croatia's Dalmatian Coast mixes a sunny climate with historic cities and one of the most breathtaking stretches of scenic shoreline in the whole Mediterranean. Slovenia's customs and culture have been influenced greatly by its surroundings. Its historic influences were Italy, Austria and Hungary but it has now been independent for two decades and is a full member of the EU. Slovenia has been described as having a "bridge" culture between east and west with its multilingual population and a mix of both Catholic and Orthodox churchgoers.
Dramatic mountains & glens, dense forests & moorland, scenic lochs, thousands of miles of coastline & dozens of stunning islands led to Scotland being voted the most beautiful country in the world by Rough Guides in 2019. The guide said: 'Add in thousands of years of history, more delicious whisky than you could taste in a lifetime and excellent golfing, hiking, and biking trails and you’ve got a very special place indeed.' We couldn't have put it better ourselves.
Dawn was born and raised in Northern Ireland - she has been keen to build a programme to Northern Ireland ever since Rediscover the World started up in 1998. You can explore most of Northern Ireland in a short space of time as it really isn't very big but it wouldn't leave you much time to relax, walk, take photographs or to spend an evening with local people in one of the many hostelries the country is famous for.
This magical 'Land of Fire and Ice' lies in the North Atlantic and is popular for city breaks and fly drives. With almost 80% of the country uninhabited Iceland's landscape is stark, yet stunning, and the sheer number of lakes, rivers, glaciers and mountains makes this a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts.
